Teo chuckled. He hadn’t really moved from his chair, fascinated by the way he could move his legs and feet just by thinking about it. Hesitantly he got up, “Here,” he pulled at Toph’s hand until she was standing on the ground again.

Ty Lee’s eyes lit up at the mention of Aang. “Aang? You guys know Aang too? Wow!” She laughed excitedly. “Small world!” She shook the boy’s hand. She liked him a lot, he was very nice and anybody nice was a friend in her book.

“Nice to meet you Teo, Haru, and The Duke.” She looked around. “Is it alright if I hang out with you guys for a little bit? Maybe you can tell me about how you met Aang!” Ty Lee suggested. She was always eager to make new friends.

“It is, and it feels like it’s getting smaller,” Teo agreed with a smile. Small world, friend with a big job. It probably would have been harder to avoid knowing about the Avatar than it was to actually was to. Especially with Aang, Aang always seemed to attract people it seemed to Teo.

The boys exchanged glances and nodded. “Of course, it’s no problem,” Teo said. They started moving along the game booths again and Haru pushed his story ahead of the other two. He bragged about his rebellion toward the Fire Nation and how Katara had liked him. The Duke just gagged before briefly giving his version.

“Well I was sort of living in one of the airtemples and they showed up,” he shrugged lightly. “It’s not very exciting. How about you Ty Lee? How did you meet him?”

“Toph!” She fell forward and he leaned forward, the strength of using his arms so much coming in handy as he helped her to at least sit up. “Toph, are you okay?”

“I-I don’t know yet…” She said, squeezing her eyes shut to favor the darkness. It soothed her slightly, allowing her to take a deep breath and evaluate the situation and how to explain it.

“I can’t explain how or why, but…I think I can see. Like, actually see. With…light and…shapes and things.”

Slowly, as Toph’s words registered, Teo slid forward off of his chair. He landed sitting on the ground with her, blinking in confusion. Most likely he wasn’t as surprised as she must have been but really, it was something.

“You can see light and everything?” He repeated stupidly.

The elder teen patted his slightly sticking up hair back down not so discreetly. “Uhm, even me?”

“Oh yeah!” She said. “I met this village while we were there last and they were all so awesome! They took me in and even gave me a traditional swamp name. I can’t pronounce it, and they still called me Toph, but it was cool to be recognized as one of them.”

Toph smiled at the fond memory.

“Oops. This is as far as I go. I don’t do wood. Or water.” Toph said as she stopped at the beginning of the dock.

“That’s amazing,” Teo said with a chuckle, “I’ll have to ask them to teach me how to say it, it must sound cool. Maybe they’ll even give me my own Water Tribe Swamp name too.”

He nodded understandingly. “I’ll be right back.”

Wheeling himself down the dock, Teo scanned the marina for one of the small boats he was sure could cut through a marshy swamp area. He skidded to a stop, finding a rather rickety, but still in use looking vessel.

A few minutes later he came back to Toph. “The lady said we could have it for the rest of the day, she also had a map of a water way that could lead us straight there,” Teo hesitated, “but that would mean both of us getting on the boat.”

Teo passed a few students as he wheeled himself up to the front door of the schoolhouse. They were chattering - gossiping about something that had to do with their teacher. The teenager frowned at them, but pushed on, kids were weirder than they had been before, he decided.

Across his lap laid the worn crutches the Duke had helped him make a year ago. Teo had been practicing with them for a while, but still preferred his wheelchair.

However, today he figured he’d visit Toph with them. His feet wouldn’t be useful to him but they’d be on the ground and maybe, maybe that’d be enough for Toph to “see” him.

“Hey Toph!” He greeted her brightly, he didn’t notice the difference in her eyes as he wheeled in. “It’s Teo.”

Toph stared dumbly at him. Teo. She recognized the wheelchair from what her vibrations could pick out when she was blind.

“Teo.” She said, sucking in a breath of air sharply as she took in his face, his hair, his whole being for the first time. She floundered for a minute, trying to explain what was happening.

She tried to stand, but the movement of the lights made her dizzy, and without her earthbending, her internal sense of balance was off. She ended up tumbling face-first into the ground in front of his wheelchair, embarassed, frightened, and confused.

“I don’t think that’s possible,” Teo frowned. His brow furrowed after a minute as he heard a tapping. He looked around until he glanced down. His eyes widened as he saw his foot tapping. “Whoa!”

He nearly tipped out of his now useless chair.

Toph nodded and set a couple gold pieces on the table for Iroh.

“Thanks for the tea, Gramps! I’m gonna go out and adventure now!”

She gave a sweet smile to Teo in silent thanks for going along with her craziness. A good travelling partner is hard to find these days.

“Thanks!” Teo called over his shoulder to Iroh as well.

As they set out to find what they needed, he wheeled himself a little faster to keep up with Toph. She took pretty long strides. He didn’t mind though, returning her smile with one that she couldn’t see.

“So you have friends in the swamp that we can visit?” He asked.
